The 2nd Scientix conference to showcase innovation in science teaching and education research
The conference will be opened by prof. José Mariano Gago, former Minister of Science, Technology, Information Society and Higher Education in Portugal (1995-2002; 2005-2011) and experimental high energy physicist at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. As a Minister, prof. Gago launched the Ciencia Viva movement, promoting science and technology among the wide public.
The keynote speakers are Ewald Breunesse and Amber S. Gell. Ewald Breunesse, Manager Energy Transitions at Shell Netherlands, is Shell's focal point for the communication of the company's long term scenarios to the media, government, businesses and schools. Amber Gell is a rocket scientist and spacecraft system engineer at Lockheed Martin - NASA, USA. She is currently part of the team designing and building the Orion Spacecraft, NASA's new spacecraft for Deep Space Exploration that will be used to take humans to the Moon, Asteroids, Mars and beyond.
One of the goals of the conference is to introduce science teachers to European collaboration in science teaching, science education research and policy, and present to them the top European and national initiatives in STEM education.
"Teachers are the catalysts for change and the key element in every educational system; but they need the right tools and right pedagogies." says Marc Durando, the Executive Director of European Schoolnet, the coordinator of the Scientix project.
"We reserved over 400 places - more than two thirds - for teachers, the Scientix Conference will give them a unique opportunity to learn about different tools, resources and methodologies in STEM education and talk to leading experts in the field," concludes Durando.
