A conference devoted to the development of a sustainable Information Society in the Baltic Sea region will take place in Helsinki, on 2 and 3 February 2000. The event is organised by the Baltic Sea States Subregional Cooperation (BSSSC) and the Uusimaa Regional Council, with support from the European Commission.

The conference is intended to outline an agenda for local and regional organisations in the Baltic Sea region. It aims to offer a strategic vision of the role and tasks of each of these organisations in building a sustainable Information Society for the citizens of the Baltic Sea region. A key feature of the conference will be a review of projects from EU Member States, from EU applicants and from the St Petersburg region.

The main themes to be covered by the conference are:

- the opportunities of the Information Society;
- implications for local and regional development;
- IT and public administrations;
- Information Society and sustainable development;
