Gravitational waves : a new window on the Universe

Conference on astrophysics and gravitational waves, by Patrice HELLO

1 December 2014 - 1 December 2014
France
Conference (in french) : Gravitational waves : a new window on the Universe.
Speaker : Patrice HELLO, Professor at the University Paris-Sud; member of the Orsay Linear Accelerator Laboratory.
Place : Maison de l'AX, 5 rue Descartes, F-75005 Paris, France.
Date : December 1, 20014 at 17:00.
Organizer : Academie Europeenne Interdisciplinaire des Sciences (AEIS)

Summary :
Gravitational waves were predicted by General Relativity and their existence established by the study of the binary pulsar 1913+16, due to J. Taylor and his collaborators. To detect directly these gravitational waves, several interferometers were built in the late 90's : Virgo (Italy) and LIGO (two sites in the USA). During the period 2005--2011 the detectors Virgo and LIGO got their nominal sensibilities but these were not sufficient for a first detection. Hence these two international collaborations have intended to gain one order in sensibility with the projects Advanced Virgo and Advanced LEGO.
My talk will first present the nature of the gravitational waves and their effect on matter. Next I will discuss interesting astrophysical sources for LIGO and Virgo. Then Virgo will be described with emphasis on the most important noise sources and the techniques to remedy. A selection of the most important results obtained so far by LIGO-Virgo will also be presented.

The end of the talk will concern the hopes and future of the two experiences (Advanced) Virgo and (Advanced) LIGO.
