The international research project ELSES (Evaluation of Local Socio-Economic Strategies in Disadvantaged Urban Areas), will be presenting its findings for discussion at a forthcoming conference in Dortmund, Germany, from 30 March to 1 April 2000

The ELSES project was funded by the TSER (Targeted socio-economic research) initiative under the EU's Fourth RTD Framework Programme (1994-1998) and is now partly funded by the Accompanying Measures component of the EU programme for 'Improving the human research potential and the socio-economic knowledge base', part of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

This research focused on measures and instruments that promote the socio-economic integration of disadvantaged communities through the generation of employment and increased incomes, and the revival of the local economy in deprived urban areas. It looked into the impact of local socio-economic development strategies in six inner city urban areas over a two-year period. The study focused on Glasgow-Govan, Duisburg-Marxloh, Pomigliano d'Arco, Malmö-Rosengård, Leiden-Noord and Nancy-Laxou.

The conference will begin with speeches, including a contribution from Achilleas Mitsos, from the European Commission's Research Directorate General. These will be followed with workshops on the second day and a field trip on the third.

The aim of the conference is to provide a platform for discussion and dialogue between researchers, politicians and practitioners in this area.
