Evaluating the technology and applications of human language technologies (HLT) will be the main theme of the forthcoming workshop 'Using evaluation within HLT programmes: results and trends' taking place in Athens on 30 May 2000.

Organised jointly by the IST/HLT-CLASS project, the ELSNET network and the European Language Resource Association (ELRA) in conjunction the LREC conference, the workshop will look at national as well as transnational projects, taking in work not just from Europe but also from the USA and Japan.

Areas to be covered in the half day workshop include the following:

- Textual and multimedia document retrieval;
- Cross-lingual information retrieval;
- Message and document understanding;
- Topic detection and tracking;
- Machine translation;
- Speech recognition and dictation;
- Speech synthesis.
