The myriad chemical and technical uses of vegetable oils are the subject of the forthcoming chemical-technical utilisation of vegetable oils (CTVO-net) conference taking place in Bonn, Germany on 20 and 21 June.

The conference is the final in a concerted action funded by the Research Directorate-General of the European Commission under the FAIR programme. Dr Ciaran Mangan of DG Research will be opening the proceedings in Bonn.

As annual non-food consumption of fats and oils in the European Union reaches 2.45 million tonnes, research into their chemical or technical applications is a major issue. The industrial applications as well as the environmental implications of vegetable oil use will be discussed in Bonn.

The conference aims to take in all of the conclusions of the CTVO-net workshops, which have been taking place since April 1998. It will also look to the future with an analysis of the funding opportunities in the Fifth Framework programme. The programme includes in its objectives the linkage of national R&D activities with those taking place in the EU environment.
