BBMRI-ERIC forum meeting towards a health and life sciences GDPR code of conduct

As any other legal text, the GDPR is not easily accessible to non-lawyers. It leaves room for interpretation by member states on certain areas relevant for research. By developing a code of conduct that is as understandable as possible, we can help guide researchers and administrative staff, reduce unnecessary fear about compliance and enhance data sharing for the sake of progress in research. This is encouraged by Article 40 of the GDPR. In the context of health research, we can build on excellent existing codes or practices such as the RD-Connect or IMI Code of Practice. Nevertheless, writing a code of conduct in accordance with Article 40 is an ambitious endeavor.

Prof. Jan-Eric Litton, Director General of BBMRI-ERIC, elaborates: “In bringing representatives from the BMS research infrastructures, medical and health associations, industry representatives, patient advocacy groups, and other interested stakeholders together, we can jointly deliver a practical code for health research and the life sciences”.

The forum meeting will follow the outline below:

Presentation of a governance concept and a timeline towards a Code of Conduct
Presentation on patient needs
Panel discussion on country perspectives
Interventions regarding 3rd countries/international organisations
Open discussion
Presenting a roadmap: topics and working groups
Commitment to joining forces
