Can the good ecological status of aquatic systems in Europe be achieved?

This week, AZTI is organising the 14th edition of its Summer Course at San Sebastian Aquarium, under the title of: "European Water Framework Directive: Is it possible to achieve good ecological status from the lessons learnt?” The event is held between Environment Day, on Monday, and the World Oceans Day, which takes place on Thursday.

5 Junio 2017 - 8 Junio 2017
Spain
The course led by the recent European environmental education award winner and AZTI researcher, Ángel Borja, is developed under the sponsorship of the European Environment Agency Academy, of which Borja is a member, and the Basque Water Board (URA). The course will be attended by 60 researchers and managers from almost 20 countries.

The course has been opened this Tuesday by the General Director of URA, Ernesto Martínez de Cabredo. Over these days, 10 speakers from 8 countries will debate what the approval of the Water Framework Directive in 2000 and its implementation over these 17 years has meant to the improvement of rivers, estuaries and coasts. To do so, the course has been divided into three parts: the lessons that have been learnt by Europe and its institutions; what has been learnt from the countries and environmental agencies and what has been learnt through science. The idea is for the conclusions of the debate to be used in the updating of this Directive, which is planned for 2018.
