Sustainable enterprise

The European Foundation for the improvement of living and working condition's sustainable development unit is organising a European conference on sustainable development, SMEs and new enterprises in Dublin, Ireland, on 12 and 13 October 2000.
The event will focus on sustainable development and consumption with the concept of 'sustainable enterprise' representing a new challenge to tomorrow's business leaders.
'SMEs present a particular challenge in the drive towards sustainable production,' says the Foundation. 'On the one hand a great number of the most innovative companies are strongly committed to sustainable modes of production. On the other, there are many SMEs still welded to traditional and often unsustainable production practices and oblivious to the exciting developments of the past two decades.'
This conference will provide an opportunity to evaluate and debate foundation research and information initiatives in support of SMEs (including the recently launched SME support database and to highlight examples of sustainable innovation). Another aim is to identify barriers still facing SMEs in their move towards sustainable production and strategies to overcome such barriers.
The conference will comprise a plenary session and a four panel session dealing with the following themes:
- product design - practical examples of SMEs;
- support systems for SMEs - innovative examples;
- training needs of SMEs;
- evaluation of a draft foundation report on factors and processes leading to successful design.
