The draft programme for the French Presidency's conference 'Towards a European innovation area' is now available. Ministers and Commissioners are expected to attend the event, to be held in Lyon, France, on 21 November 2000.

'A strong impetus is needed to promote innovation in Europe and to seize its potential in order to deal with the challenges of our times,' say the organisers from the French Ministries of Economy, Finance and Industry and Research.

Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for enterprise (including innovation policy) and the information society, and Laurent Fabius, the French Minister of Economy Finance and Industry, will introduce the event. Alternating keynote speeches by Ministers and Commissioners with round tables on specific themes will follow. The event aims to bring together all those involved in innovative practices and policies in Europe and beyond.

The symposium will benefit from the conclusions of the second European forum for innovative enterprises organised by the European Commission on 20 November. There will also be a ceremony awarding recognition to the 15 most dynamic European economic areas on the creation of start-ups.
