'The Habitat Directive is having an increasing impact in the use and management of marine areas and the conservation of wildlife,' say the organisers of the Marine SACs conference to be held on 15 and 16 November 2000. This event aims to provide a forum for the first major review of the progress made in implementing the Directive on the UK's marine sites.

The event is organised with support from the European Commission to explore good practice and learning emerging over the last four years. In particular, it will address experiences in managing marine Special Conservation Areas (SACs) and the understanding generated through the UK Marine SACs Project.

'This conference provides an important opportunity for all those closely involved in the management of marine SACS in the UK and other European countries to reflect on the priorities for future action. It will bring together many sectors including statutory authorities, government departments, industry organisations and interest groups,' say the organisers.

The conference will cover the following main themes through presentations, discussion breaks and poster sessions:

- The UK's policies & approaches to implementing the Directive in the marine environment;

- aims and outputs of the UK Marine SACs Project.

- Understanding sites: the scientific challenges;
- - scientific knowledge and frameworks for effective site management;
- - developments in marine monitoring techniques and protocols.

- Building partnerships on sites:
- - participation needs on sites;
- - methods of strengthening partnerships and participation.

- Management actions and plans;
- - options for management schemes on sites;
- - achievements made in establishing management schemes.

- Future leads;
- - capturing the right learning and good practice;
- - priorities for future actions.
