The European Commission's Enterprise Directorate-General will hold a workshop in Brussels on 9 and 10 April 2001 to review the initial findings of a study on the impact of standardisation.

The study aims to analyse, quantitatively and qualitatively, which aspects of the economy and of society have been affected by standards (such as external trade, innovation, health and safety of workers, protection of consumers and environment).

The following sectors are included in the analysis: medical devices and medical informatics; aeronautics mechanical engineering including impact on health and safety); electronic commerce; software engineering; environment monitoring; quality; food hygiene and safety; and nanotechnology.

The event will provide an opportunity for participants in the study, which was launched in November 2000, to focus the study and detailed data collection and analysis on impact areas of interest to their sectors and concerns.
