A European Science Summit on "Science, Technology and Society in Europe", organized by the European Parliament in collaboration with the Commission of the European Communities, industrial research bodies and the FNRS (Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique), will take place in Brussels on 14-15 October 1993.

Science and technology have played a significant role in establishing current levels of prosperity and well-being in Europe. However, research expenditure by Governments and firms in Europe is tending to stagnate in the present economic slow-down.

The aim of the Summit, which coincides with ongoing discussions on the Community's Fourth Framework Programme of research and technological development, is to draw the attention of leading politicians and industrialists to the importance of science and technology in society, and to ways in which they can help meet the new challenges facing Europe.

The two-day Summit will begin with an Inaugural Plenary Session with opening speeches by Dr. Egon Klepsch, President of the European Parliament, and Professor Antonio Ruberti, Commission Vice-President responsible for Research Policy and Training.

The Inauguration is followed by two pairs of parallel Sessions (Thursday 14 and Friday 15, respectively) on key topics:
- Science, Technology and Sustainable development. Towards a new sustainable model;
- Science, Industry and the Quality of Life;

- Science, Culture and Society;
- European Research in the World Context.

The Summit will terminate with presentations of the four Sessions by the rapporteurs, followed by discussion. Conclusions of the meeting will be presented by Dr. Linkhor, of the European Parliament's Committee on Energy, rapporteur on the Fourth Framework Programme.
Requests to be invited to the Summmit, or for further information, should be addressed to:
