The seventh European Exhibition and Conference on Electronic Trading, EDI '93, will take place in Birmingham, UK, on 5-7 October 1993.

Electronic Data Exchange (EDI) offers a standardized method for data to be transferred between computers and hence for electronic transfer of business data between partners. Organizations adopting EDI will appreciate a variety of operational benefits. These include significant reduction in administrative costs, overcoming errors via paperless automation, through to enhanced cashflow data and information flow.

At a more advanced level, EDI also opens the door to strategic benefits such as: Faster trade cycling; the ability to adopt new business processes such as Just-in-Time manufacturing techniques; the ability to win new business or retain existing customers via improvements in business efficiency; rapid response to highly competitive new market entrants.

The Conference is divided into three "streams" which allow participants to view key topics from their own perspective:

- First stream "Why should I do it?": Sessions explain how EDI makes business processes more efficient and cost effective;
- Second stream: "How do I do it?": Most effective implementation of a tailored EDI system;
- Third stream: "Who else is doing it?: Applications of EDI in another industry or in other countries may have wider significance. Ideas are disseminated from well conceived and innovative implementations around Europe.

Delegates may switch between streams during the course of the Convention. Key subject areas under examination are:

- Business processing engineering;
- Technology trends and overviews;
- Technology and infrastructure;
- Liability;
- Supply chain management;
- Justification and exploitation;
- EDI in Europe;
- Enabling services

The Communications network Community programme on trade electronic data exchange (TEDIS) will have a stand at the Exhibition, and will welcome questions on the Commission's role in the advancement of EDI in Europe. A Commission representative will also take part in the Conference, speaking on EDI-enabling legislation.
