Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin will discuss European issues and research policy with members of the public during the EU institutions' Open Door Day on 4 May.

The event is a prelude to Europe Day on 9 May, which marks the date in 1950 when French foreign minister Robert Schuman announced a plan which laid the foundations for the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the starting point for further European integration and the creation of the EU.

Visitors to the Commission will be able to see exhibitions on enlargement and research and visit the Commission's meeting room. There will be a 'collector's corner' where euro coins can be swapped, and ballet performances from the Commission-supported PARTS (Performing arts research and training studios).

For the first time, enlargement candidate countries will celebrate with the EU institutions under the banner 'let's get to know each other.' At the Parliament, candidate countries will present themselves and there will be an opportunity to meet and debate with MEPs. A full programme of family entertainment will be laid on.

The Council, the Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions have also organised activities for the day.
