The conference on "Research, Training and Agriculture, the New Challenges", taking place in Brussels (Centre A. Borschette) on 3-4 November 1993, examines how new technologies, research and training may meet the needs of European agriculture, particularly in the light of the Community's agricultural policy reform and its strengthened rural development policy.

Over 250 experts from the Member States and elsewhere will take part, representing all interested sectors: Research and development, professional training; agricultural organizations; agro-industry, consumer organizations, and public and private bodies responsible for research and training policy.

Commission Vice-President Professor A. Ruberti will be present at the opening session, together with Mr. C. Desama, President of the Research and Technology Commission of the European Parliament, Mr. F. Borgo, President of the Agriculture, Rural development and Fisheries Commission of the European Parliament, as well as other distinguished figures.

The conference takes place at an important moment for the future of Community agriculture, with the Council and the European Parliament at present examining the Commission's proposal for the Fourth Framework Programme for Community RTD (1994-1998) and the Commission's working document on the scientific and technical content of the specific programmes within the Framework Programme.

It is intended that the two-day event, comprising round table meetings and special working groups on key topics, will provide information valuable to the Commission in the finalization of its formal proposals in areas relating to agriculture, training, the environment and sustainable development.
