The European Commission, along with the European group on life sciences, is organising a conference on the subject of sustainable agriculture for developing countries and options from life sciences and biotechnology, to take place in Brussels on 30 and 31 January 2003.

The event will bring together representatives from developing countries and the biotechnology industry, scientists, non-governmental development organisations, governmental and international organisations, education and media specialists and European citizens, particularly the younger generation.

Among the speakers at the event are European Commissioners Philippe Busquin (Research) and Poul Nielson (Development).

The conference is conceived as a discussion forum with civil society. A number of scientific case studies will be presented, each clearly placed in its social and economic context. The presentations will be in layman's terms. Theories and ideologies will be avoided, with the emphasis on practical solutions to real problems. These keynote lectures will have the role of ensuring reliable introductory overviews of the topics, addressing a broad public, with the scope of providing a basis for initiating public debate.

On the conference website, a background paper has been prepared to introduce people to some of the event's themes, and an online forum has been developed to encourage an interactive dialogue that will raise questions for debate at the event itselfFor registration and further information, please consult the following web address:
