European workshop on road pricing and automatic debiting systems

Following an initiative from several projects carried out under the Community's DRIVE programme (Transport Telematics: Area 2 within the specific programme of RTD in telematic systems in areas of general interest, 1990-1994), the Commission of the European Communities is organizing a technical workshop on Road Pricing and Automatic Debiting Systems to take place in Brussels during January 1994.
General interest in this technology has dramatically increased since the meeting of the European Ministers of Transport on 16 June 1993. The main guidelines for a common European policy on tolls and charges for the use of road infrastructures are now established in Council Directive 93/89/EEC of 12.11.1993.
The workshop is intended to help national administrators, network operators, industrialists and researchers to set up a common approach for the implementation of road pricing and associated technologies in Europe. This common approach is considered essential to reach the necessary level of interoperability between the different European tolling systems.
An exact date for the workshop (towards the end of January 1994) will be established shortly.
