Belgium's Royal Society of Chemistry will host a lecture on 'the oceans - our future' in Brussels on 8 May.

Jean Boissonnas, former head of unit for marine science research in the European Commission, will examine current issues relevant to society such as pollution and algal blooms, and global warming, its causes and consequences.

Dr Boissonnas will also examine new developments in marine research, including gas hydrates and micro-organisms in the sea floor. He will also describe how technological developments such as satellites, underwater vehicles and observatories have enabled oceanography to progress.For further information, please contact:
