Professor Martin Bangemann, Member of the European Commission responsible for industry and telecommunications, has invited a group of leading industrialists to form a High Level Group on the Information Society, meeting in Brussels on 15 February 1994.

Areas which will be covered at the meeting are the development and inter-operability of networks for facilitating the dissemination of information, trans-European data banks, electronic mail and interactive communication systems.

The group, which includes experts and senior representatives from the European informatics sector, was established at the request of the Council following its analysis of the Commission's White Paper on Growth, Competitiveness and Employment (COM(93) 700 of 5.12.1993).

The aim of the meeting is to prepare a submission on the development of the "information society" in the EU for the European Summit in Corfu on 24-25 June 1994. On the basis of this report, the Council will adopt an operational programme defining the precise procedures for action and the necessary means.
