A conference on language engineering in the European Union will take place in Paris on 6-7 July 1994. The programme is being jointly sponsored by the European Commission and the French Ministry of research and industry.

The development of multilingual language industry within the EU has accelerated in recent years. As a result of initiatives of the European Commission, research and development in natural language and speech processing is beginning to produce commercially viable technologies.

1994 is an important year for this area. While EU research under the Third Framework Programme is reaching fruition, new initiatives are soon to be launched within the Fourth Framework Programme, in particular DG XIII's Language Engineering Initiative. Comparable programmes are in preparation by the French Ministry of Research and Industry. This conference will help the research and user communities to review what has been accomplished to date and to identify new priorities for the remainder of the decade. Its objectives are:

- To promote the achievements of language engineering programmes and projects and to stimulate the industrial exploitation of the results;
- To increase the synergy between projects and research in general;
- to provide a forum for meetings between language engineers from different backgrounds;
- To provide research graduates with an opportunity to learn about the language engineering profession.

The conference programme will be organized around invited presentations from leading international researchers and will place special emphasis on results from current European research projects.
