European conference on sustainable cities and towns, Denmark
This conference will be the first major gathering of European leaders and local authority officials to develop a practical framework for local efforts to implement the principle of sustainability. It aims to formulate European local authorities' views on environmental policy in order to present these at the Global Forum, Manchester, June 1994. Three main goals of the conference are:
- To create a forum of interested and involved actors to exchange information and experience, and to discuss examples of good environmental practice;
- To present, discuss and evaluate the draft of the First Annual Sustainable Cities Report by the European Commission's Urban Environment Expert Group;
- To discuss and adopt a European Charter on Sustainable Cities and Towns. This Charter will be the basis for the formation of a European Network of Sustainable Cities and Towns whose members will implement and test the actions suggested by the Report and the Conference.
The Conference is intended to bring together European leaders, officials and elected representatives from local authorities, especially mayors, environmental commissioners, council leaders and environmental units, as well as representatives from businesses, environmental organizations, universities and institutes.
