A seminar entitled "Regional resources of biomass and their use for energy production plants" will take place in Berlin on 2-3 May 1994.

This seminar will focus on the presentation of proven and reliable technologies for the thermal use of biomass fuels. The regular and secure supply of power plants with biomass is another important issue which will be dealt with during the seminar since biomass fuels will compete against fossil fuels only in case of well established distribution networks. From the economic point of view, there are no substantial cost disadvantages associated with the use of biomass fuels.

Considerable need exits for development and information, in particular in regions with low agricultural production rates and inadequate agricultural infrastructure, as is the case in many of the regions of Eastern and Central Europe. Some of the topics scheduled for discussion are:
- The THERMIE programme with particular reference to biomass;
- The potential for biomass energy;
- Technical aspects of biomass fuels;
- Macro and micro economic aspects of the thermal use of biomass.

The seminar will be held within the framework of the OPET network.
