A conference on clean coal technologies will be held in Madrid on 5 May 1994. The conference is being organized by the Spanish company Ocicabon, which a member of the OPET Network. The event is being held as part of the THERMIE programme's series of conferences on clean coal technologies throughout Europe between May and July 1994.

The THERMIE programme is the Commission's energy initiative designed to promote better use of technologies which improve energy efficiency and to support the development of new technologies in this area.

The conference will be held within the OPET (Organizations for the Promotion of Energy Technologies) framework which links forty private and public organizations located in the twelve Member States and the thirteen European Energy Centres in Central and Eastern European countries.

The lectures during the conference will cover a range of topics relevant to the design and operation of advanced coal combustion and emission control technologies, including:

- Advanced pulverized coal combustion;
- Circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC);
- Pressurized fluid bed combustion (PFBC);
- Emission control;
- Waste product utilization;
- Automation and control;
- Topping cycle;
- Integrated gasification and combined cycle (IGCC).

The intended audience will be composed of advanced undergraduate and graduate students from mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering areas with the aim of developing their interest in clean coal technologies. By focusing on the practical aspects of these technologies, the lectures will contribute to providing students and academics with an orientation for future research activities and professional work perspectives.
