The International Association for Technology Assessment and Forecasting Institutions (IATAFI) will hold its first annual conference, to coincide with its annual general meeting, workshops and exhibition, in Bergen, Norway, on 2-6 May 1994.

IATAFI is a new organization founded under the auspices of the United Nations. Its goals include:

- To link developing countries to Technology Assessment (TA) capabilities worldwide;
- To understand the needs of developing countries and promote cooperation between interested parties by encouraging participation in international forums and projects;
- To implement an electronic network, based on regional centres and cooperating institutes, which will allow the transfer of information between the IATAFI and those who need it;
- To create an environment of common interest for TA and forecasting institutions around the world.

The conference will provide an environment where participants can freely exchange views and ideas on topics related to the main themes of the IATAFI. It will focus on:

- Preliminary discussions on technological needs in the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and other developing countries, and on the ways in which technologies can be transferred in the light of current political uncertainties;
- Finding ways in which the Western Nations can assist environmental cleanup operations through the assessment of current technologies;
- Presenting possible cooperative partners to establish a stable, permanent communication network in Central Africa and other developing areas;
- Looking at ways to ensure cooperation between agencies and institutions.

The European Commission's VALUE programme will participate as part of the "VALUE Interfaces" initiative for strengthening the European technology assessment infrastructure. This initiative provides support for groups who want to build on their TA expertise and who wish to improve relationships between the decision-makers and those who are conducting the technology assessments.
