A symposium to debate the implications of free or open-source software and medicine will be held at the UN in New York on 13 April, entitled 'Challenging intellectual property: access to knowledge issues in open source and medicine.'

The symposium will analyse the implications of bio-intellectual property ownership, open source software and how it can contribute to economic development, and the consequences for science and society of, for example, the human genome project - who, if anyone, should control access to it?

Speakers will include members of the UNU-MERIT (United Nations University - Maastricht Economic and social research and training centre on innovation and technology) project, the UN Joint Inspection Unit, the Wellcome Trust and the Brazilian national institute for information technology. For further information, please visit: http://www.merit.unu.edu/seminars/docs/NYAgenda.pdf(opens in new window)
