The International Symposium on "Human Health and Environment: Mechanisms of Toxicity and Biomakers to Detect Adverse Effects of Chemicals" will take place in Salsomaggiote Terme, Parma, on 25-30 September 1994.

The symposium is organized by the Scientific Committee on Occupational Toxicology (SCOT) of the International Commission on Occupational health (ICOH) and by DG XII of the European Commission in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

The symposium programme will consist of oral sessions and poster presentations. Keynote speakers will provide an overview of the following five main topics:
- Mechanistic basis for health risk assessment;
- Biomakers for exposure assessment;
- Biomakers of individual susceptibility;
- Biomakers for health surveillance and effect monitoring;
- Biomakers in health risk assessment and regulation.

The STEP programme of DG XII will present a number of projects dealing with nephrotoxicity.
