Dipterocarps Conference
The conference is being organized by the International Working Group on Dipterocarps of the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations and is being sponsored by, among others, the Commission's programme for science and technology for developing countries (STD).
Dipterocarp forests represent the major vegetation type in Southeast Asia and are the most important timber producing forests in the region. In some forests over 60% of the timber species come from dipterocarps which subsequently experience severe exploitation and depletion.
The conference aims to:
- Provide a forum for scientists and foresters to exchange information and experiences on a range of dipterocarp issues;
- Evaluate research and development for sustainable management of dipterocarp forests;
- Formulate recommendations for assisting policy makers to integrate tropical forestry management and reforestation.
Plenary sessions during the conference will focus on the following areas:
- Physiomorphology of dipterocarps;
- Seed biology and technology;
- Ecology and environment;
- Management of dipterocarp forests.
