The European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) and the European Commission are jointly organising a strategic seminar on 'Engineering secure complex software systems and services' on 16 October 2008, in Brussels, Belgium.

This strategic seminar aims to bring together academic and industrial expertise in secure software engineering and to link it with best practices in the field, in order to increase the trustworthiness of the resulting information and communication technology (ICT) systems.

In the seminar, participants will:
- present the latest progress on key research and development initiatives in engineering secure complex software systems and services and in achieving ICT system-level assurance;
- encourage dialogue between scientists and industrial players with a view to promoting collaboration;
- discuss the balance between rigorous scientific approaches, aiming to achieve provably secure systems and cost-benefit considerations;
- identify future key research challenges to be addressed in the field.
