The EU-funded VEIL ('Values, equality and differences in liberal democracies') project will hold its final conference on 20 and 21 November in Vienna, Austria.

Under the title 'Framing the Muslim headscarf: policy debates and regulations in Europe', the VEIL consortium will present its research results on how values and norms of liberal democracies are not only re-negotiated but collective identities re-constructed within the European integration process. International scientists will then comment on the findings. Keynotes lectures will be given on 'Secularism and women's equality' and 'The Islamic headscarf in Western Europe: mirror of identity'.

In the past three years, the VEIL project focused on the debates, conflicts and regulations concerning head and body coverings of Muslim women in the public sphere of eight European countries. As a highly visible symbol, the Muslim headscarf has been the subject of heated debates across Europe.For further information, please visit:
