The historical foundations of research policies in Europe
The conference is organized as part of the European Science and Technology Forum, set up by the Commission to promote reflection and debate on the historical, social, ethical and cultural aspects of science and technology.
The conference will examine the development of research policies in European countries, from the creation of the Academies of Science in the 17th century to the creation of large national research bodies at the beginning of the 20th century. Main topics will include the history of the gradual nationalization of science, and the mechanisms for the diffusion of institutional innovations throughout Europe. Development in different countries will be compared and the effects of cultural diversity identified and discussed.
