A free workshop on "European user requirements for internationalization of IT and character set technology" will take place on 1-2 December 1994 in Luxembourg. It is organized by a CEN Technical Committee and sponsored by DG III of the European Commission.

The workshop aims to clarify the development of a European strategy in the field of character set technology (CST) standardization, in the context of the emerging infrastructure for multilingual communications services and information technology (IT) products stemming from the European single market.

The following topics will be discussed:

- CST requirements;
- Linguistic aspects of the information society;
- Language engineering and linguistic requirements for internationalization;
- Telematics services and networking;
- User interfaces and multimedia technology;
- European Nervous System (ENS);
- Cooperation of standardization bodies;
- Procurements needs for internationalization standards.

The workshop will present an overview of user requirements concerning internationalization. Its results will provide the main input to a project team that has been set up to propose a European strategy in the field of CST standardization.
