Recent trends show that distributed computing is becoming a more practical and economical solution for many organisations. Distributed computing consists of multiple autonomous computers that communicate through a network in order to achieve a common goal. Cloud computing, which is a form of large-scale distributed computing, has attracted significant attention from industry and academia and is fast becoming a cheaper alternative to costly centralised systems. Recent research also points to the utility of cloud computing in data mining, machine learning and knowledge discovery. The workshop will bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to discuss new and emerging trends in cloud computing technologies, programming models and software services. The event will also look at data mining and knowledge discovery approaches and identify the greatest challenges in embracing cloud computing infrastructure for scaling algorithms to petabyte sized datasets. For further information, please visit: http://www.ornl.gov/sci/knowledgediscovery/CloudComputing/KDCloud-12/
