In the framework of the THERMIE programme, the European Commission, DG XVII, is organizing a European Seminar on Mobility and Society, to take place in Schopfheim, Germany, on 27-28 March 1995.

The THERMIE programme is currently promoting measures for the market introduction of innovative technologies and systems in the traffic sector. As well as promoting the availability of energy efficient and environmentally sound transport systems, the programme aims at improving the social coherence of mobility requirements by a change in people's behaviour.

The seminar will discuss these measures, including new concepts for transport services in European countries and the means to encourage a voluntary change in individuals' behaviour vis-a-vis transport and new forms of mobility.

The following issues will be discussed:

- Transport policy;
- The impact of mobility on energy consumption and the environment;
- Mobility requirements and transport management;
- Public transport: A key actor in reducing energy consumption and in improving the urban environment;
- Traffic reduction from the point of view of the private industry;
- Promotion of car-pooling in companies;
- Status and perspectives of mobility offices;
- New forms of mobility: The function of transport companies.

A plenary session will discuss experiences with mobility in the Member States, including car-pooling, commuters' transport systems, and mobility management.
