In the framework of the European Radiation Protection Education and Training Programme (ERPET), the European Commission, DG XII, is organizing a course entitled "PC COSYMA" on 20-24 March 1995 in Madrid.

COSYMA is a probabilistic accident consequence assessment (ACA) system for use in calculating the risk posed by potential nuclear accidents giving releases to the atmosphere. A version of COSYMA which is capable of running on a PC has now been developed and is available from the Commission.

The course is intended for technical people who work in probabilistic accident consequence assessment and will familiarize participants with the use of PC COSYMA. It can be used for deterministic or probabilistic assessments. Deterministic assessments give detailed results for a single set of atmospheric conditions; probabilistic assessments give results taking account of the full range of atmospheric conditions and their respective frequencies of occurrence.

The course will cover the following areas:

- Structure of the user guide;
- The input interface and the calculation programmes;
- The results interface;
- Source terms and grids;
- Met sampling;
- Dispersion and deposition;
- Doses;
- Countermeasures, sheltering and movement of people;
- Health effects and economic consequences;
- Spanish PCA programme;
- Results of intercomparation exercises;
- Practical sessions.
