A symposium to present the results of the European Union's research programme on severe accidents in fission safety (1991-1995), FISA '95, will be held in Luxembourg on 20-22 November 1995. It is organized by DG XII of the European Commission.

The fission safety programme will come to an end in June 1995. It was organized as a reinforced concerted action, with an emphasis on research related to the confinement of radioactivity under severe accident conditions in light-water reactors. It aimed to assess the existing know-how concerning severe accident phenomena and the development of a consensus about these issues at EU level based on appropriate R&D experimental and analytical activities.

FISA '95 will present the results of the eight projects carried out under the programme. It will bring together scientists involved in the programme as well as those interested in the field. Strategic aspects will be discussed in connection with future R&D needs for nuclear safety and balance of prevention/mitigation aspects of severe accidents.
