Fourth annual conference on the management and disposal of radioactive waste
The conference will present the main results of the Conmmunity's specific research and technical development programme (Euratom) in the field of management and storage of radioactive waste (1990-1994) and highlight the progress achieved in this area. It will also provide a forum for discussion and an exchange of views between experts and scientists from the EU as well as from the international scientific community.
The topics to be covered include:
- Studies of waste management systems;
- Treatment of radioactive waste with a view to volume reduction;
- Characterization and qualification of waste forms and packages, quality assurance and quality control;
- Characterization and evaluation of the geological barrier: THM properties of host rocks, radionuclide migration, geochemical processes, natural analogues;
- Repository design and construction to develop emplacement, backfilling and sealing techniques with a view to demonstrating the feasibility of radioactive waste disposal in deep geological repositories;
- Performance and safety assessment of the disposal systems.
The opening session of the conference will provide an overview of present knowledge and a final panel session will aim to determine the priorities for the future.
