Investment and trade in southern Africa - the role of European companies and institutions

A conference entitled "Investment and trade in southern Africa - the role of European companies and institutions" will be held in Brussels, Belgium on 19-20 October 1995. The conference, organized by the Club de Bruxelles, is supported by DG VIII of the European Commission.

Close cooperation exists between the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the European Union, with the SADC benefitting from the considerable resources of the Lomé Convention and the European Investment Bank.

The conference aims to give an overview of investment opportunities in this economically important region and will give participating companies the opportunity to meet with and listen to representatives from SADC countries and the institutions directly concerned in EU/SADC cooperation (SADC, European Commission, European Parliament, European Investment Bank, etc.).

Topics covered by the conference will include:

- Overview of the new relations between the EU and Southern Africa;
- Regional cooperation between the Southern African countries: implications for enterprises;
- Relations between the EU and the Republic of South Africa: the new trade agreement;
- EU aid programmes for the Southern African region: new horizons and prospects for the private sector;
- Presentation of tourism in Southern Africa;
- Direct investment in Southern Africa and the special case of transport;
- Cooperation between European and the Southern African private sectors;
- Case studies on the energy and information technology/telecommunications sectors.

Participants in the conference will, in addition, receive a 350-page study on investment prospects and conditions in Southern Africa.
