A research workshop on the effects of the environment on indoor cultural property will be held in Würzburg, Germany, from 11-13 December 1995. The workshop, which is being organized by DG XII of the European Commission, is aimed primarily at scientists, researchers, museum curators, librarians, archivists but is open to any other interested parties.

The aims of the workshop are to:

- Promote the establishment of a European network between the different research projects funded under the European Commission's Environment and Climate programme and other researchers in the same field;
- Review the state-of-the-art, in the European Union and abroad, with regard to the assessment of environmental factors and their effect on indoor cultural property;
- Improve understanding of innovative technologies and methods of controlling factors affecting the transfer of pollutants inside museums (ie. mass tourism).

In particular, presentations will be made on five research projects, funded under the Commission's Environment and Climate programme, in the following areas:

- Assessing and monitoring the environment of cultural property;
- Environmental research for art conservation;
- Deposition of gases and particles and their corrosive effect on surfaces of cultural and artistic value inside museums;
- Deterioration and conservation of vegetable tanned leather;
- Atmospheric eutrophication and saecular organic pollution (biological and mineralogical reactions of Mediterranean monuments).

These presentations will be complemented by overviews of other research initiatives in this field and the presentation of a number of selected papers.
