International conference "One decade after Chernobyl: Summing up the consequences"
The conference is being organized in cooperation with the United Nations, through its Department of Humanitarian Affairs (UNDHA), its Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), its Environment Programme (UNEP), its Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and its Food and Agricultural Organization (FAP). The Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is also cooperating in the conference.
The event will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 8-12 April 1996, and will cover the following topics:
- Health effects attributable to radiation exposure caused by the accident, including clinically observed effects (particularly those in occupationally exposed work, such as emergency workers), detected thyroid effects and epidemiologically quantified and theoretically estimated long-term health effects, such as induction of malignancies and hereditary disorders;
- Other health related effects, including psychological consequences, mental distress and anxiety;
- Environmental consequences;
- Social, economic, institutional and political impacts;
- Remedial measures taken to enhance nuclear safety;
- The consequences of the accident put into perspective;
- Prognosis for the future - the Chernobyl sarcophagus.
The Conference is directed at senior technical specialists, including medical, environmental and engineering experts, mainly in the field of radiation protection and nuclear safety. However, the audience will also embrace opinion formers and decision-makers, who may be faced with taking decisions in the aftermath of a nuclear or radiation accident.
