The DASIA'96 (Data Systems in Aerospace) conference will take place in Rome, Italy, from 20-24 May 1996. The conference, which is being organized by EUROSPACE, in coordination with the Centre Nationale d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), the European Space Agency, EUROCONTROL and the European Commission, is a continuation of the traditional international software engineering conference "Ada in Aerospace".

The "Ada in Aerospace" conference was first organized by EUROSPACE in 1990 and, from then on, on a yearly basis. The "Ada in Aerospace" conferences have been a great success and have attracted a wide range of participants from both insider and outside the aerospace community. Experience gathered in the past few years has, however, demonstrated the need for a conference covering a wider range of aspects related not only to software but to computer-based applications and technologies in general.

Aerospace and transportation are application areas well-known for the high demands on reliability and safety, requirements which are increasingly also being coupled with the need for high performance. It is the aim of the DASIA'96 conference, however, to include other application areas and related technologies with similar characteristics.

The conference will present application engineering and management experience of a generic nature and technologies (methods, tools and components) of high quality. It will focus on computer-based applications and technologies. Both software and hardware aspects are included to the level of design methods and implementation languages plus associated testing.

The conference will include plenary session presentations, poster presentations, working groups, panel discussions and an exhibition of software and hardware tools and components. The themes and topics to be covered by the conference include:

- Development issues:
. Software engineering lifecycle phases, methods and tools;
. Case tools;
. Languages;
. ASIC design methods and tools;
. Prototyping and simulation;
. Reusability;
. Reverse engineering;
. Process modelling;

- Architectures:
. Real time aspects and runtime kernels;
. Distribution;
. Autonomy;
. Data handling system architectures;
. Communication facilities;
. Command and telemetry facilities;
. High speed, high performance support;
. Fault tolerance system;

- Operational aspects:
. Guidance, navigation and control;
. Image and signal processing;
. GIS/Earth observation applications;
. Operations including check-out;

- Management and QA:
. Software best practice and quality;
. Standards;
. Quality assurance, metrics;
. Configuration management;
. Reliability and safety;
. Training and education;
. Management aspect for small and large projects.

Application areas to be covered by the conference include:

- On-board and on-ground: Satellite and manned space systems;
- Scientific and application missions;
- Small and micro-satellites;
- Earth observation/remote sensing, meteorology;
- Launchers;
- Telecommunications;
- Avionics systems;
- Air traffic control;
- Transportation.

Papers are presently being invited, in these areas, for presentation at the conference.
