An international symposium on small specimen test techniques for measuring material properties will be held in New Orleans, USA, on 13-14 January 1997. The symposium is being organized by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), in conjunction with the European Network on Ageing Materials Evaluation and Studies (AMES) and the TC5 technical sub-committee on dynamic testing at intermediate strain rates of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS).

The Institute for Advanced Materials Structural Components Integrity, part of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, is supporting the organization of this event through AMES, of which it is a member.

The symposium will emphasize toughness and strength determinations. Focus will be on exploring the types of testing which can be performed using small amounts of material for determining the material properties needed for assessing nuclear reactor pressure vessel integrity, thermal annealing response and plant life extension. The purpose is to explicitly address the experimental, analytical or computational aspects of small and miniature specimen test techniques.

Papers are invited in particular on subsize impact and fracture toughness testing techniques and the use of reconstituted specimens, as well as correlations or benchmarking of subsize specimen testing techniques and results (Charpy, hardness and fracture toughness) to standard test techniques.
