A one-day conference entitled "Waste management and recycling in south-east Asia - Prospects and opportunities for European suppliers of technology and services" will take place in London, UK, on 26 February 1996.

The conference, which is being organized by the Institute of European Trade and Technology (IETT), in cooperation with the Regional Institute of Environmental Technology (RIET) in Singapore, will take a close look at the development of environmentally-sound waste management in eight Asian countries: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Participants will be provided with the latest information on waste markets in Asia, as well as a wide range of practical advice on how to seek and win important contracts. The conference will focus, in particular, on municipal and industrial wastes in metropolitan areas, in order to help potential investors decide which countries to target specifically. It will also identify different stages of environmental development in each country so that firms can formulate their strategies accordingly.

The key topics covered by the conference will include:

- Potential for investment and environmental expertise;
- How to identify opportunities and win contracts;
- Environmental policies, privatization, new waste management programmes;
- Infrastructure: current situation and future requirements;
- Case studies of large waste projects;
- Public and private sector financing in the region;
- Funding available for small and medium-sized enterprises from the EU's ECIP initiative.
