A conference entitled "Environment - new European policies for 1996-2000" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 15-16 February 1996. The conference is being organized by the "Club de Bruxelles" and is supported by the European Commission (DG XI).

The conference has been timed to coincide with the completion, by the Commission, of the mid-term review and evaluation of the European Community programme of policy and action in relation to the environment and sustainable development. This programme, also known as the fifth Environment Action Programme, covers the period 1992-2000 and forms the basis of the environment policy of the Union.

The aim of the conference is to provide participants with an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the broad guidelines to emerge from this evaluation and actively contribute to debates on the future implementation of the programme.

Topics to be covered by the conference include:

- The state of European environmental legislation: challenges ahead;
- Partnership for prevention or liability, and compensation for damage;
- The voluntary approach in practice: the prospects for new policy instruments;
- The international dimension;
- Integration of environmental policy in the target sectors (agriculture, energy, industry, transport, tourism);
- Environmental policy and revision of the EU Treaty.

The event is aimed at a wide audience, including: industrial companies, professional groupings, agricultural organizations, banks, insurance companies, lawyers, international consultants, environmental and consumer organizations, as well as national, regional and local authorities.
