ESPRIT, the European Union's specific RTD programme in the field of information technologies, will be holding an Information Update Day in Brussels, Belgium, on 26 February 1996. The event is aimed at providing participants with detailed information on the forthcoming calls for proposals for the ESPRIT programme. It will also provide an occasion for the official launch of the updated ESPRIT work programme.

This Information Day is part of the build-up to the publication, on 15 March 1996, of the sixth call for proposals since the start of the new programme in late 1994. Another major call is planned for 15 September 1996, and detailed information will be given about the content of both calls. An updated version of the information package accompanying the ESPRIT calls, which gives guidance and instructions on preparing and submitting a proposal, will be made available for the first time.

The updated version of the ESPRIT work programme will also be officially presented. The changes compared to the work programme used for the 1994 and 1995 calls are primarily presentational, although certain tasks that were well covered in the responses to earlier calls have been removed, and new tasks added.

The Information Update Day will gather together potential proposers from all 18 European Union and EEA Member States, and from other countries associated with the programme. Representatives from Central and Eastern Europe will be particularly welcome. The participation of representatives from SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) is also especially encouraged.

The Information Update Day will include:

- An overview of new procedures, new documentation (work-programme and information package) and special provisions (followed by questions and answers);

- Parallel sessions for each programme domain:
. Software technologies;
. Technologies for components and subsystems;
. Multimedia systems;
. Long-term research;
. Open microprocessor systems initiative;
. High-performance computing and networking;
. Technologies for business processes;
. Integration in manufacturing.
