EuroGOOS, the European Association of Agencies to promote the Global Ocean Observing System, is holding its first international conference, on 7-11 October 1996, in The Hague, The Netherlands. Entitled "Operational oceanography: the challenge for European cooperation", the aim of the conference is to identify the next steps in the provision of European operational oceanographic services to industry, government agencies and "value added" service companies. The European Commission's specific RTD programme in the area of marine science and technology (MAST III) will be participating in the event.

The three-day conference will combine up-to-date information on operational oceanography with the opportunity to discuss the economic benefits of using real time marine data, to analyse commercial and governmental requirements and to identify the technological needs for new instrumentation, modelling systems and data distribution networks.

Those interested in presenting papers on the themes covered by the conference are invited to submit abstracts to the conference organizers by 1 April 1996.
