A conference entitled "European societies or European Society?", focused on the issue of social exclusion and social integration in Europe, will take place on 26-31 March 1996 in Cork, Ireland. The conference is being organized by the European Science Foundation, with the support of the European Commission's Human Capital and Mobility programme (HCM).

The conference objective is to promote dialogue between sociologists involved with research on poverty and inequality and those social scientists whose work has been focused on the developing EU research agenda relating to social exclusion and social integration. Sessions will be devoted to:

- Conceptualizing poverty and inequality;
- Measuring inequality and poverty;
- Dynamics and the reproduction of inequalities;
- Work, unemployment and pensions;
- Gender and household poverty, and inequality;
- Class and underclass perspectives.

A limited number of grants to facilitate the participation of young scientists will be available under the HCM Programme.
