A conference entitled "Neural mechanisms of learning and memory: modulation of the trace" will take place in San Feliu de Guixols, Spain, on 16-21 April 1996. Organized by the European Science Foundation, with the support of the European Commission's Human Capital and Mobility Programme (HCM), the main focus of the event will be the mechanisms and functional significance of neuromodulatory influences on the memory trace.

Conference sessions will include:

- The fractionation of memory;
- The hebbian synapse: is it sufficient?;
- Stress, attention and reward;
- Invertebrate models;
- Molecular and cellular correlates of contingency;
- Oscillation and temporal coding;
- Sleep and memory;
- Ageing and cognition.

A limited number of grants to facilitate the participation of young scientists from the less developed regions of the Community will be available under the HCM Programme.
