The Committee of the Regions of the European Union, in cooperation with the European Commission, DG XVI, is organizing a series of six seminars based on the Commission's "Europe 2000+" document on land-use planning in the European Union.

These meetings, scheduled to take place in 1996, will bring together local and regional civil authorities, social and economic actors involved in the development of land-use planning, members of the Committee of the Regions, European civil servants, and European and national parliamentarians.

The seminars aim to:

- Inform local and regional authorities of Community activities in the area of land-use planning;
- Encourage regional bodies to participate in these activities;
- Encourage cooperation with Eastern and Central European countries in this area;
- Give local and regional officials the opportunity to meet representatives of the European institutions.

The first seminar in the series will take place, on 28 March 1996, in the French town of Besançon. The seminar, which will focus of the Alpine Arc area, will involve French, German, Austrian and Italian regions and cities.

The five other seminars will be as follows:

- Seminar on the Mediterranean area involving cities and regions in Spain, France, Italy and Greece: 22 April 1996, Tuscany, Italy;

- Seminar involving regions that have a frontier with Eastern and Central Europe (Germany, Finland, Austria, Italy and Greece): 6-7 May 1996, Bavaria, Germany;

- Seminar on the Benelux area, bringing together cities and regions in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany: 4 June 1996, Maastricht, The Netherlands;

- Seminar on the North Sea/Baltic zone, involving cities and regions in the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Finland: September/October 1996, Scotland;

- Seminar on the Atlantic Arc zone, involving Portuguese, Spanish, French, British and Irish regions and cities: October/November 1996, Galicia, Spain.
