The European Information Society Awareness Week will take place on 6-10 May 1996. The Week is organized by the European Commission, DG XXIII, and the Information Society Project Office (DG III and DG XIII), in collaboration with members of the network of Euro-Info Centres and other intermediaries.

The objective of the Week is to promote awareness of the Information Society and its practical implications for businesses, and SMEs in particular, by means of events held throughout the European Union, Central and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean countries.

The events organized will take account of local needs, and will present the following types of technology:

- General basic services/tools: e-mail, file transfer, EDI, video-conferencing, multimedia, online databases, Internet;
- Electronic commerce: online supply of products/services, electronic transactions, electronic procurement;
- Organization of work/production: teleworking, production planning;
- Education: distance learning, self-training.

Some of the events being held as part of the Week will have satellite link-ups to the "Business on the Web" conference in Paris on 9-10 May (see RTD-News RCN 5840). This conference is part of the Fifth International World Wide Web Conference, to be held in Paris in the same week (see RTD-News RCN 5530).
